EVLYN & THE WORLD TRANSPLANT GAMES

State Swim is a proud sponsor of
Evlyn Hossack
, a competitor at the
17th World Transplant Games.
We wish Evlyn much success in her
chosen events and hope she has a
fantastic experience.

The 17th World Transplant Games are in Australia on the Gold Coast during August. The Games exist to visibly demonstrate the benefits of successful organ transplantation, work to increase public awareness of its success and thereby increase organ donation rates, as well ar promote the full rehabilitation and well being of all participants. Each athlete must have received one of the following transplants: kidney, heart, lung, heart-lung, liver, pancreas, corneal or
bone marrow.

Let me introduce Evlyn Hossack, 25 yrs old, the youngest of 4 children, energetic, fun loving, a lady who will not let her past stop her from fulfilling her sporting endeavours. Although being born with a hole in her heart which was fixed at nine months of age, Evlyn enjoyed most things her friends did, especially sport but had to slow down a bit as she got puffed more easily. Evlyn's life, however, changed dramatically in 2005 when she was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension which is a lung disease. Transplantation was now the only option available for Evlyn. Immediate changes were made to the once independant adult, with Evlyn unable to continue with her career she had to leave her job, moved back home, became wheel chair bound, was dependant on oxygen and basically couldn't do anything. Thankfully Evlyn received a Heart and Double Lung life-saving transplant in 2008. No one is more appreciative then Evlyn, of the dedicated staff that contributed to Evlyns 'second chance' and the weeks of rehabilitation and of course to the donor and their family. Asked if there was anything she could say regarding her experience, her reply was "have patience, listen to your body, listen to your doctor and just let it happen,
you will get through it".

This is one inspirational and determined lady, not only 1 event is on her wish list but 4, ten-pin bowling, beach volleyball, track & field and swimming
(50m breaststroke and 50m medley). The Australian team has 200 competitors, 30 of which are from Western Australia. There are 300 participants coming over from the UK but that doesn't faze Evlyn who thinks her best chance of a medal, is in 10 pin bowling and maybe swimming. The next couple of months will consist of training Monday to Friday. After the Games it will be a return to full time work, save to travel to Europe and consider the next World Games. Evlyn will fill us in on her experience and achievements in September.

If you would like to make a contribution to cover Evlyns expenses, please contact us at admin@stateswim.com.au. For organ donor information, please refer to your Medicare office.

I would like to thank all the parents who have helped out , especially with timing
on Super Swim nights. Keep volunteering.

PROMOTION WITHIN SQUADS
There is a criteria set by the Director of Coaching at State Swim.
As head coach the first point of assessment is by the individual team
coach with a focus on technique. This is coupled with times achieved
at Super Swims, improvement and finally a required level of fitness to
maintain the technique. I can assure all parents Simon Quayle (head coach)
and the individual team coaches are in constant communication and
assessment. If you require an update on your childs progress, please
speak to the individual coach or Simon Quayle.

The next Super Swim night is on Thursday 25th June. All Team members
and 400 Gold swimmers are encouraged to attend.

SWIMMER OF THE MONTH

May 2009 Swimmer of the Month goes to two
boys Kyle Rohloff  (pictured) and
Conor McPhan, both from Team Gold.
Both boys are very determined and this is
shown in their Personal Best times. In all
swims bar 1, Kyle received PB’s, 9 in total,
from the last Super Swim. Kyle is quiet and
unassuming but certainly has a fire to do
his best. Keep up the great work!

SWIMMER OF THE MONTH Pt.2

Conor McPhan is equally
Swimmer Of The Month.
Connor who has fairly recently been
promoted to Team Gold, has really taken
up the challenge. Conor’s times for all
strokes have improved substantially.
Well done Connor. Logan is also a high
achiever with a Silver medal for 20 PB's.

INTERSCHOOL CARNIVAL

Vey Important News, the Whitford City Health
& Sport Team made up of Team Bronze,
Team Silver and Team Gold is now
collectively known as the Marines, our
colour is green…….the green Marines.
Without painting the obvious picture,
Marines have a double meaning, everything
to do with oceans and an elite group of
warriors. Thank you tor everyone that
nominated for the Interschool Carnival (North), we had close to 70 kids, which
equates to 210 separate events for the Marines themselves. At each carnival
Simon gives two people an opportunity to Captain, people that show good
endeavours, respect of their peers, empathetic and those who lead by example
at training. The captaincy is rotational each carnival. The two captains are
Kyle Rohloff and Sam Stewart, vice-captains Conor McPhan and
Anita Cooney. Well Done!

CARNIVAL

Sunday the 7th of June saw our Whitford City Green Marines victorious as the winners of the Interschool Carnival - North. We had 72 competitors, which was an amazing effort by parents and children to get involved in this Carnival. Our group of coaches are very proud of the effort at the carnival. The team spirit was great, plenty of cheering from your friends, family and some you did not know so well. The best thing was the Green Marines got back the trophy for North of the River Champions. On an individual note there were some remarkable swims and I thought I would mention a couple; Nick Franich, Peri and Jed Thompson, Brenna Varcoe particularly in the 50 breaststroke and also helping a young fella Jay to swim with him in butterfly, Conor McPhan and Marisa Sanft . At this stage I have not time to compare all our individual times against PB’s but I expect records to have been broken.  We were very lucky also having some Champion Boys and Girls.  One of our super coaches, Amy Lucas, donated a pair of girls and boys super fast bathers. The coaches voted for recipients based on courage and persistence. It was hard coming to consensus with so man y worthy contenders; the girl was Brenna Varco while the boy was Jed Thompson. There is only single size so if too small or too big they can’t be swapped and will hand it to next on the list.  Well done to all the parents and family, the captains and vice captains for the team and all the coaches from the Green Marines who put in a lot of passion. Results : Joondalup came 2nd, Osborne Park 3rd and Ellenbrook 4th.

Thanks to the kid's who made it an exciting event, all all their hard training, enthusiasm and determination, paid off. A big thank you to the parents who helped with time keeping and who help out at training, it is appreciated. Please see our website www.stateswim.com.au
for photos and all results and times.

KID'S SPOT

Q: What do you call an elephant swimming?
A: swimming trunks!!!!

OK, so it's not the funniest joke you've ever
heard, try finding swimming related jokes,
they are not easy to come by. Actually I
would like you to email me on
admin@stateswim.com.au your best
(clean and non offensive) joke for the
next Achievers Monthly. I will pick out a
couple that get the most chuckles and print them.

GUESS WHO ?
*One of our most successful swimmers started squad training at
8 years of age.
*He (that was a clue) was allergic to chlorine but grew out of it.
*His foot size (or should we say flipper) is 17, wow that's big!
*To this day, he holds the record for being the fastest 14 year old
male swimmer in the history of swimming... awesome
*He was the youngest ever world champion at 15.
*Competed mainly in 100, 200, 400 & 800 metre freestyle but would swim in
just about any race...and usually win.
*Although not his most well known nickname, 'Flipper' was one of the names
he answered to.
The answer is printed somewhere in this newsletter, you will just have to
find it, although I think some of you have probably guessed it by now.

TRUE OR FALSE
You shouldn't swim straight after eating.
It actually is true, your parents really know a thing or two when they tell you this.
You shouldn't swim or do any strenuous exercise for about an hour after eating.
This is mainly because your body is trying to digest your food and you may
cause you to be sick, not necessarily get a cramp.
So allow your 'food to go down' after eating, then GO FOR IT!

SOMETHING TO MAKE
Play Dough

You will need:
2 cups of plain flour
4 tablespoons of Cream Of Tartar
2 tablespoons of cooking oil
1 cup of salt
food colouring (optional)
2 cups of water
What to do: (you will need an adult to help you)
Mix the ingredients in a saucepan, stir over medium heat for 3-5 minutes or
until the mixture congeals. Let mixture cool. Now it's ready.
It's best kept in a plastic container in the fridge.
