EVLYN & THE WORLD TRANSPLANT GAMES
State Swim is a proud sponsor of
Evlyn Hossack, a competitor at the
17th World Transplant Games. We wish
Evlyn much success in her chosen events
and hope she has a fantastic experience.
The 17th World Transplant Games are in Australia on the Gold Coast during August. The Games exist to visibly demonstrate the benefits of successful organ transplantation, work to increase public awareness of its success and thereby increase organ donation rates, as well ar promote the full rehabilitation and well being of all participants. Each athlete must have received one of the following transplants: kidney, heart, lung, heart-lung, liver, pancreas, corneal or bone marrow.
Let me introduce Evlyn Hossack, 25 yrs old, the youngest of 4 children, energetic, fun loving, a lady who will not let her past stop her from fulfilling her sporting endeavours. Although being born with a hole in her heart which was fixed at nine months of age, Evlyn enjoyed most things her friends did, especially sport but had to slow down a bit as she got puffed more easily. Evlyn's life, however, changed dramatically in 2005 when she was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension which is a lung disease. Transplantation was now the only option available for Evlyn. Immediate changes were made to the once independant adult, with Evlyn unable to continue with her career she had to leave her job, moved back home, became wheel chair bound, was dependant on oxygen and basically couldn't do anything. Thankfully Evlyn received a Heart and Double Lung life-saving transplant in 2008. No one is more
appreciative then Evlyn, of the dedicated staff that contributed to Evlyns 'second chance' and the weeks of rehabilitation and of course to the donor and their family. Asked if there was anything she could say regarding her experience, her reply was "have patience, listen to your body, listen to your doctor and just let it happen,
you will get through it".
This is one inspirational and determined lady, not only 1 event is on her wish list but 4, ten-pin bowling, beach volleyball, track & field and swimming
(50m breaststroke and 50m medley). The Australian team has 200 competitors, 30 of which are from Western Australia. There are 300 participants coming over from the UK but that doesn't faze Evlyn who thinks her best chance of a medal, is in 10 pin bowling and maybe swimming. The next couple of months will consist of training Monday to Friday. After the Games it will be a return to full time work, save to travel to Europe and consider the next World Games. Evlyn will fill us in on her experience and achievements in September.
If you would like to make a contribution to cover Evlyns expenses, please contact us at admin@stateswim.com.au. For organ donor information, please refer to your Medicare office.
INTERSCHOOL CARNIVAL RESULTS
On the 7th of June the Interschool Carnival,
for our southern schools, took place on a
beautiful sunny day (that we scheduled to
happen) at the Canning Vale Swimming
School. East Fremantle had a lot at stake
to continue their winning streak whilst
Secret Harbour and Canning Vale were
putting their best swimmers forward to
try to take the title for themselves. Meanwhile
all the East Fremantle coaches were sweating nervously in anticipation. First
event was 100mtr freestyle and Canning Vale and Secret Harbour were off to
a fantastic start. Canning Vale had the lead after the first event. Please see
our website www.stateswim.com.au for all results, times and more photos from
the Carnival. By half way through the meet, East Fremantle was back in front but
by only 17 points, coaches up a fight and wouldn't go down easily. Canning Vale
had the answers in the younger children's divisions. Although it appeared a close
finish, the results were 'all good' for East Fremantle Swimming School as the
winner for this Carnival.
Final results
East Fremantle – 590
Canning Vale – 486
Secret Harbour - 208
The swimming ability displayed by all competitors was outstanding. We had
3 age Champions at the carnival who gave huge performances.
Josh Maurice age 14
Sarah Anderson age 15
Jessica Sanisbury age 11
Secret Harbour being the youngest of the southern swimming schools pulled
off an admirable performance despite having the smallest in numbers at the
carnival. What we lacked in numbers we made up with 'noise levels' from our
enthusiastic cheer squad, bring it on! Canning Vale also showed that they were
a team to watch out for at the All School Carnival to be held in November this
year. Date to be advised. There was strong support from the family and friends
attending, without any crowd control being necessary!
A BIG THANKS goes out to all the time keepers and people who helped to
make the Carnival the success that it was, we are very appreciative.
CARNIVAL PHOTOS
The carnival was enjoyed by all
who attended and there was
plenty of competetive spirit there
too.Go Secret harbour!
HEALTH & SPORT NEWS
Congratulations to the following swimmeres who have achieved the number of
Personal Best times required for our medals:
JESSICA SAINSBURY – 10 PB's – Bronze Medal
HANNAH FIRTH – 30 PB's – Gold Medal
Well done to JAYDON KNOWLES who has become our newest member
of TEAM SILVER. Keep up the good work.
Just a quick note to all parents of squad members. Please make sure that if your
child has an injury, no matter how small, that the coach on pool deck for that
session, is made aware of the injury, preferably before training begins.
I would also strongly advise that if your child has an ongoing injury, to seek
medical attention/advise. This way we can reduce the risk of further injury.
If you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to talk with us. Emily.
The SWIMMER OF THE MONTH for May is JOSHUA PAVITT.
Josh is a very hard worker who is always willing to have a go and never fails to
show up to training with a smile on his face. Well done Josh!
SUPERSWIM
Next Super Swim is to be held on Thursday 25th June from 6pm.
All Team members and 400 Gold swimmers are encouraged to attend.

KID'S SPOT
Q: What do you call an elephant swimming?
A: swimming trunks!!!!
OK, so it's not the funniest joke you've ever
heard, try finding swimming related
jokes, they are not easy to come by.
Actually I would like you to email me on
admin@stateswim.com.au your best
(clean and non offensive) joke for the
next Achievers Monthly.
I will pick out a couple that get the most chuckles and print them.
GUESS WHO ?
*One of our most successful swimmers started squad training at
8 years of age.
*He (that was a clue) was allergic to chlorine but grew out of it.
*His foot size (or should we say flipper) is 17, wow that's big!
*To this day, he holds the record for being the fastest 14 year old
male swimmer in the history of swimming... awesome
*He was the youngest ever world champion at 15.
*Competed mainly in 100, 200, 400 & 800 metre freestyle but would swim in
just about any race...and usually win.
*Although not his most well known nickname, 'Flipper' was one of the names
he answered to.
The answer is printed somewhere in this newsletter, you will just have to
find it, although I think some of you have probably guessed it by now.
TRUE OR FALSE
You shouldn't swim straight after eating.
It actually is true, your parents really know a thing or two when they tell you this.
You shouldn't swim or do any strenuous exercise for about an hour after eating.
This is mainly because your body is trying to digest your food and you may
cause you to be sick, not necessarily get a cramp.
So allow your 'food to go down' after eating, then GO FOR IT!
SOMETHING TO MAKE
Play Dough
You will need:
2 cups of plain flour
4 tablespoons of Cream Of Tartar
2 tablespoons of cooking oil
1 cup of salt
food colouring (optional)
2 cups of water
What to do: (you will need an adult to help you)
Mix the ingredients in a saucepan, stir over medium heat for 3-5 minutes or
until the mixture congeals. Let mixture cool. Now it's ready.
It's best kept in a plastic container in the fridge.
