The Great Northern Highway Kimberley Project

Big Mabel Bridge opens to traffic

The new bridge over Big Mabel Creek, 20km south of Warmun, opened for traffic on 19 December 2008.

Team Savannah continue to work at the site, building stairs, completing rock protection and other ancillary work.

Other Progress

The new bridge over the floodways at Fletchers Creek and Telegraph Creek are progressing well and expected to be completed in February and March 2009.

The bridges will not open to traffic until the approach roads are completed during the dry season.

Construction on the bridges will continue through the wet season until all structural work is complete.

Team Savannah is progressing road-works in the Bow River Area north of Warmun with work about 60% complete and due to open late in September 2009.

Earthworks will continue until early February 2009 when they will be suspended for the wet season. Construction will start again in early April 2009 and work through to completion.

Baby Boabs arrive home

Two Hundred baby boab trees were returned to Warmun in January. The small trees have been grown from seeds collected from the giant 750 year old boab tree that was relocated from Telegraph Creek to Kings Park and Botanic Garden in July 2008.

Botanists from the park harvested the seeds and germinated the trees in preparation for their return. The trees are a gift back to the Traditional Owners who gave permission for the 750 year old tree to be relocated to the park as a gift to the people of WA.

Tony Petrusma, Team Savannah’s Project Director said “This is a fitting tribute to the generousity of the Traditional Owners in gifting the boab to Kings Park and Botanic Garden. We hope the baby trees thrive and remind everyone of the incredible achievement of relocating such a huge tree over 3000km south to Perth.”

Some of the baby boabs were planted around the Warmun Sports Ground and some are being cared for by Team Savannah until they can be planted near the original site at Telegraph Creek.

Members of the Team Savannah workforce joined the community and assisted in the planting.

The big boab in Kings Park is doing well and new leaves and roots have appeared.
