The Great Northern Highway Kimberley Project

Progress

The Telegraph Creek Bridge is almost complete with work on the connecting road planned for June and July 2009. Construction of the Fletchers Creek Bridge is also nearing completion with road work planned for July and August 2009.
All work at Big Mabel Creek is close to completion and the temporary speed restriction over the new bridge will be lifted in May 2009.
A delay in construction due to the unexpected extent of rock in the Bow River section has the project around 10% behind schedule. Additional crews are now working to clear the impacted areas. Pavement work will commence in the coming months and surfacing work will start in late June.
Please be aware that there will be additional traffic management in place as construction of the new alignment occurs over the existing highway.
The project is expected to meet a planned completion by the end of September 2009.

Anzac Day

Team Savannah held a dawn service at their campsite on Anzac Day. Five people addressed the group and a wreath was placed at the base of a flag pole.

Community Engagement with Warmun

The latest community satisfaction survey indicates an excellent working relationship between Team Savannah and the Warmun community. When asked how well the community and workforce get on, all respondents rated it between good and excellent. Congratulations to all workers and community members.

Workers enjoy a break

Easter Sunday was a rostered day off for Team Savannah workers. The great weather inspired a variety of recreational activities including crabbing in Wyndham, fishing in Kununurra, boating on the Ord River, camping, hiking and swimming at El Questro and visiting Lake Argyle. An Easter Egg hunt at the Mabel Downs Camp made for a fun day.

New Trainees

Seven potential trainees have undertaken job readiness training in Kununurra in preparation for interviews for employment with Team Savannah. The new trainees will be undertaking Certificate II in Civil Construction and join existing trainees on the job. Supervisors are looking forward to supporting the trainees as they gain valuable experience working as part of a team. Local mentors will also assist the trainees as they prepare for work.

Broome businesses working with Team Savannah

Broome Contracting and Kimberley Soil Laboratory are two Broome based companies currently working with Team Savannah to complete construction on the Great Northern Highway. Kimberley Quarries worked on the project in 2008. Broome Contracting have an excavator and operator on site. Several local Broome residents have also gained work on the project.
